anyone know how to play the lick when tony goes up the neck in the eminor part than slides down? it’s hard to make it out by ear because it’s so fast

That is his D-28 before he put the shell pickguard on.

Nice to here him, Norman and Doc playing the tunes as thier approaches are quite different.

i saw this song played with a banjo and a guitar today at an open mic and the two playing it described it as bluegrass with irish influence.

this song is really special and important.

Oh, don’t get me wrong, only playing it 50 times would do it but Tony grew up doing this thing so I would bet he played many more times than that. I doubt any could play it better and few if any could play it as good.

  12. BlindTom61 says:

A lot of people have played that tune a 1,000 times over the years, and they still suck. This video is probably 35 years old. Maybe he only played it 156 times at the time! :- )

  13. edmunk says:

Just remember folks. He’s played that thousands of times over the years.

i belive this man could do this in his sleep yea tycho im hearing you man smooth as a baby’s bottom like his hands are part of the guitar.

His ending licks blow me away.

Yup, I can play this song on guitar in two different arrangements..can even do it faster than this.. but I’ve made peace with the fact I will never play it as good as this. Tony Rice is the greatest example of playing fast while still having the “phrasing” (or whatever you call being rediculously good) that I know of. Listen to it…it “bounces,” but it’s bouncing in the actual rhythm…I don’t care who you are, that’s pretty hard…and If you dissagree, I challenge you to prove it.

  23. johntrik says:

I don’t know about the young cats like Sutton or Kilby ,Tony Rice IS and will always be the master!!! Maybe the are guys who can play faster, but when it comes to taste, timing, tone & heart no one can beat Tony Rice!!!!

  24. Tycho114 says:

What amazes me is the economy of both of Tony’s hands; no extraneous movements whatsoever. Brilliant.

  25. dreadnought45 says:

That’s the 1935 D-28 Tony’s playing once owed by Clarence White. it has the carved out large sound hole.
